My dinner table benches
Below the board. I painted it with wood stain in red, because the chairs I already have are in red. So I chose a color similar to the color of my chairs. The board was pretty bended, maybe because I left it lean against the wall. So I had to straighten it out again. I managed it by gluing four slats on the back of the board and by bending it back with clamps. Additionally I drilled holes for wood dowels, and glued in the wood dowels. Below the picture of the backside of the board.
Below the bench legs. I painted them black, because the chair legs are in black as well. So same rationals as above. I drilled holes for the wood dowels on top of the legs and along the sidebars. So I will later attach the board with the legs using wood dowels.
I used bone glue to glue the board to the legs. Bone glue needs to be mixed with water and heated up to around 60 degrees Celsius. I have a water cooker for doing this. While warm it needs to be processed. Several clamps tighten the board with the legs. See picture below:
I realized that the bench bended too much when sitting on it in the middle. So I had to strengthen it with a bar along the board. The side bars across the board disturb an attachment along the board, so I decided to use a slat and spare out the parts where the sidebars disturb, see picture below.
Below a picture where you can see how the slat fits to the bottom of the bench board.
I painted the slat with black wood stain and attached it to the board with wood dowels and bone glue.
Here the bench without clamps:
The picture below shows both benches after putting on some bee wax. In the background you see the chairs. Note the chair colors and bench colors:
Below the completed benches next to the dinner table. I will replace the chairs with self made ones, as soon as I find the time.
Final Words
I thought that I should have colored one bench to light green instead of red, but I guess I took the conservative approach. Maybe I will paint the the coming chairs to green replacing the ones on the picture, but we will see.
